Dentist in Raleigh, NC: Your Ally in Achieving Optimum Dental Health

By David Gover

It used to be that people took good care of their mouth and teeth thinking that it would be good for their oral health; however, now it is known that it also helps maintain one’s overall well-being. This makes paying attention to good dental habits even more important than before. By not keeping the mouth healthy, a person may be vulnerable to gum disease, which allows bacteria to cause trouble in other parts of the body. Through regular cleaning at home and regular trips to a dentist in Raleigh, NC, one can maintain good oral and dental health.

Some of the conditions that can result from poor oral health stems from periodontitis, which can lead to cardiovascular disease, bacterial pneumonia, ulcers, tooth loss, and even osteoporosis. Women should pay extra attention to the condition of their teeth and mouth, especially when they are pregnant or are planning to conceive. This is because gum disease has been known to cause premature birth and other complications.

The most basic way to take care of the mouth and teeth at home is through brushing and flossing. Brushing twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, is still the standard rule. A good technique is to hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums. When it comes to toothpaste, it is recommended to use one with fluoride because this can help harden tooth enamel and lessens the risk of decay. The typical duration for brushing must be between two to three minutes, but it must be done properly and not just for the sake of brushing. Flossing the teeth daily is also helpful after brushing.

Oral health care also involves limiting certain food that can harm the teeth. Acidic drinks and some bottled beverages contain ingredients that can soften tooth material, while sugary foods are converted into acids by bacteria present in dental plaque, so sweet treats must be taken in moderation. Also, people have a tendency to use their teeth for other things other than eating, like for removing bottle caps or ripping food wrappers open, and these should be avoided because they can chip or damage the teeth.

An essential part of oral health care is visiting dentists in Raleigh, NC from an established practice such as Gover and Gover Dentistry who can perform dental exams and cleanings, as well as other dentistry services such as cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
